Commissioning Engineer Day Rates in the UK: What Affects Your Rate
What drives UK commissioning engineer day rates — sector, voltage, region, IR35 status and experience — and how to benchmark yours.
Why commissioning rates vary so much
Commissioning engineers work across very different markets: data centres, HV substations, BESS, rail systems and building services. Each has its own demand cycle and skills shortage, which is why two engineers with the same job title can be paid very differently.
The biggest drivers are the sector, the voltage level and protection systems involved, the region, and whether the role is inside or outside IR35.
Sector and specialism
Data centre and grid-connection programmes have pushed demand for experienced commissioning engineers sharply higher. Specialists in protection, SCADA and HV switching typically command a premium over general LV commissioning.
Region and IR35
London and the South East generally pay more, but remote sites and shift work can close that gap. Inside-IR35 roles usually carry a higher headline day rate to compensate for PAYE deductions — compare take-home, not headline rates.
